» Back to listing ISO 14001 changes

29th October 2015

Companies holding ISO 14001 should begin the process of planning for the changes required under the new ISO14001:2015 standard.  The major changes under the new standard are summarised below:

• Strategic Leadership - The Environmental Management System (EMS) should be integrated with business processes and compatible with business strategy. Top management should demonstrate their involvement in the development and implementation of the EMS.
• Lifecycle - The EMS will need to consider and manage impacts relating to the whole life cycle of their activities products and services, in addition to those on their site.
• Interested Parties - Businesses will be required to identify stakeholders, their needs and expectations and develop communication plans.
• Risks and opportunities - Businesses will need to consider the impact of a changing environment on their organisation.

In addition to the changes in the requirements of the standard, the structure of the standard has also changed, this will require a substantial overhaul of the existing EMS documentation within the company and presents the opportunity to think about developing the EMS documentation with a view to the future implementation of a formalised H&S management systems.
